My name is Robert Cowin, D.C., of Wollongong, N.S.W. Wollongong is a seaside city 50 miles (80km) from Sydney. I plan to retire in 2006 or 2007, as gracefully as possible for my patients and as gradually as necessary for my successor(s). I will negotiate written undertakings to help the new chiropractor(s) win the confidence of patients with their present skills; develop new skills appropriate to specialized upper-cervical adjusting, and obtain the finance to buy the practice.
The practice is notable on several counts:
It opened in Wollongong, N.S.W., in 1969, and is the longest-established upper-cervical practice in Australia
Its procedures were the subject of one of the first chiropractic studies to appear in a peer-reviewed, non-chiropractic journal [Aldis GK, Hill JM. Analysis of a chiropractor’s data. Journal of Proceedings, Royal Society of New South Wales 1979; 112:93-9. Reprinted in J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1980; 3:177-93 and in J Aust Chiropr Assoc 1981; 12:8-14.]. A 2001 study showed that it had an exceptionally high percentage (31.5% as opposed to 1%) of patients presenting with non-musculoskeletal conditions [Hawk C, Long CR, Boulanger KT. Prevalence of non-musculoskeletal complaints in chiropractic practice: report from a practice-based research program. J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2001; 24:157-69.].
A 1999 in-house survey of 100 consecutive patients showed that the average patient lived 32 kms from the practice. That is well above published averages in the profession, where the majority of patients live nearer to the practice they attend.
My partner and sister Dr Kathleen Bras (nee Cowin) graduated from PCC in 1969. Our practice here has been exclusively instrument adjustment, upper-cervical for the 36 years since; supported both of us till Kathleen’s retirement three years ago, and could again support two chiropractors.
As a student in PCC, my own education in the upper-cervical work began in 1965 as a member and later as president of the (then) PCC Upper Cervical Society.
Prior to graduation, I was helped greatly by eminent chiropractors when I studied H.I.O. with Dr Bud Crowder, the Blair work with Dr Bill Blair, the Grostic (NUCCA) work with Dr Ralph Gregory and, after graduation, when I spent five months as an unpaid intern-apprentice with Drs Burl and Grover Pettibon. If possible I now want to pass on that help and knowledge.
In this practice, inner-ear (tinnitus, hearing loss, dizziness) and other non-musculoskeletal manifestations of the upper-cervical subluxation form a significant part of each day’s agenda.
